The
Hirshhorn Museum
And
Sculpture Garden
Washington, DC
The Hirshhorn opened in 1974, becoming the fourteenth addition to the Smithsonian collection, resting along the Washington, DC mall with its honored fellow members. Named for Joseph H. Hirshhorn whose 6000+ art collection became the building’s first works, its focus on contemporary and modern art served to compliment the National Gallery of Art’s focus on Dutch, French, and Italian art.
Today the Hirshhorn is a leading voice for contemporary art and culture. As the nation’s platform for today’s greatest influential artists, the museum has become one of the most visited modern art museums in the United States. Its distictive circular design offers its visitors a uniquely meaningful, personal experience, both within its walls and as an external projection of the best that contemporary art has to offer.
Through groundbreaking exhibitions, events, research, and acquisitions, the museum’s staff creates exciting opportunities for its visitors to encounter the most revered artists of the 21st century. The Hirshhorn’s holdings encompass one of the most extensive collections of postwar art in the world, and remains committed to providing the artists of today a global platform to explore new ways to create.
